Carbone is a former side midfielder or side back, capable of playing as defensive or central midfielder. His career began in 1988 at Bari, where he played 53 league matches and scored 2 goals in two seasons. He was sold to Milan in 1990 and after a season with 27 games in all competitions and one goal, he was loaned to Napoli, Bari and Fiorentina. He was eventually sold to Piacenza in 1995. He played also for Reggiana, Atalanta, Pistoiese, Ternana, Pro Patria and retired in 2005.
A versatile player, Carbone was unselfish and fast, gifted with fine basic technique and good sprint that allowed him to push forward and intercept the ball with more efficiency. On the other hand, he lacked of strength due to a thin physique. He possessed a decent long range shot, although he didn't score many goals.
