Bull was a centre forward and one of Wolverhampton Wanderers top ever scorer with 306 goals in 561 matches from 1986 to 1999. He played also for Tipton Town, West Bromwich Albion and Hereford United where he retired in 2001. He capped 13 times for England and scored 4 goals between 1989 and 1990 − becoming the only Second Division player to be capped at the time − being part of the 1990 FIFA World Cup squad.
Bull was a prolific scorer, right footed but able with the left as well. He had speed, reaction, good ball control and dribbling, he could score easily in 1-on-1 situations but also with first time touches, headers or from difficult spots. Sometimes he acted as assist-man, passing back or moving to the flank and sending fast short passes to the box.
