Kreek is a former midfielder and defender, who played on the left in his early years and mostly in the center in his late career. His career began in 1989 at Ajax, where he played 113 matches and scored 8 goals in five seasons. In 1994, he joined Padova, where he was one of the best in the team during the two Serie A seasons and one of the key players in the first one, where the Biancoscudati avoided relegation. His great performances were awarded with his first and only cap for Netherlands in 1995. He left Padova in 1996 after 54 matches and 10 goals. After a season at Perugia in 1996-97, he came back to Netherlands, playing 171 games for Vitesse, scoring 14 times, from 1997 to 2002. He retired in 2006 after experiences at AEK Athens and Willem II.
Kreek was a complete player of quality and quantity, gifted with good strength, speed, passing and shooting ability. Despite having played as defensive midfielder and left back in his early career, he was used at Padova as left side midfielder or left wingback. He was one of those players who kept moving, shooting and creating scoring chances for the entire match. He possessed fine technique, dribbling and a thunderous shot, which he could deliver even first time or with volleys with ease. He was mainly left-footed but he could use the right foot with the same accuracy. He delivered superb through passes and fast crosses with both feet and the outside. He also was a good free kick taker. His offensive playstyle was a real trouble for the opposing defences because his moves were unpredictable since he was either an excellent playmaker and shooter, effective both outside and inside the box.
When he joined Vitesse, he became a way more defensive player, acting mainly as centre back and sometimes as defensive midfielder, left back, central midfielder and left side midfielder. He slower than before and didn't excel as defender. On the other hand, he was still a capable passer, who distributed the ball through the center or delivered good pinpoint crosses from the back. He also didn't lose his ability from set pieces and improved his heading, positioning and anticipation. What Vitesse took advantage though was Kreek's versatility that gave the team numerous line-up options.
