Sabău is a former right side or central midfielder. His career began in 1986. He played for Universitatea Cluj and ASA Târgu Mureș before joining Mircea Lucescu's Dinamo București, where he was a key player between 1988 and 1990, playing 49 league matches and scoring 8 goals. He transferred to Feyenoord in 1990. In the Netherlands he didn't play too much − 49 games in all competitions with 11 goals − but he gave his important contribution. He met Lucescu again when he joined Brescia in 1992 and again he was a key player: 115 appearances and 13 goals in total in five seasons − considering also the second spell in the team in 1997-98. Then he played for Reggiana, Rapid București, again Universitatea Cluj, Gaz Metan Mediaș and retired in 2005. Important for Romania national team too, he won 55 caps, scoring 8 goals.
Sabău wasn't maybe always in great form but he was a solid team player who put quantity at the service of his teammates, showing also great qualities. He was a bit slow but gifted with excellent vision of the game and passing ability. He could be dangerous thanks to his very good dribbling ability with which he beat the opposing defenders or outside the box when he delivted one of his nice long range shots that made him score some remarkable goals.
