INFO:
Di Matteo is a former central midfielder, capable to play in any other midfield role. Born in Switzerland from Italian parents, his career began in 1988 at Schaffhausen. He then played for Zürich in 1991-92 and Aarau in 1992-93 before transferring to Italy at Lazio. He played 115 matches and scored 7 goals for the Biancocelesti from 1993 to 1996. He eventually had his best time at Chelsea from 1996 to 2002 ─ when he retired due to injury when he was only 31 years old ─ playing 161 games, scoring 23 goals, winning two FA Cups, a Football League Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, a UEFA Supercup and an FA Charity Shield. He capped 34 times for Italy, scoring twice and taking part to the 1996 UEFA Euro and 1998 FIFA World Cup.
A complete midfielder, Di Matteo was gifted with good strength but yet was elegant in the field. He had great personality that he showed not only in the midfield but occasionally in defence too when he acted as sweeper to replace Roberto Cravero at Lazio. His cool temperament usually kept him out of troubles with the referees while his good physical conditions kept him injury free until the unfortunate even of 28th September 2000, when he suffered a tibia and fibula triple fracture in a UEFA Cup match against St. Gallen. Accurate with both feet, he possessed very good technique as well as the ability to deliver fast and inch-perfect passes. He wasn't too fast but could still make up large distances and had boundless stamina, thanks to which could constanty attack, defend and tackle clean to regain the ball. Gifted with a thunderous shot, he was a threat from outside the box.
