Diego López was a centre back or right back. He spent the majority of his career at Cagliari, where he's considered a legend. He played 343 matches and scored 9 goals for the Rossoblu from 1998 to 2010, being captain in the last three seasons. He played also for River Plate de Montevideo and Racing Santander. He gained 39 caps for Uruguay.
López was a fine defender, not very skillful but gifted with fighting spirit and good strength. He was nicknamed el Jefe (which means "leader" or "colonel") for his leadership and ability to control meticulously and sometimes severely the defence. He was effective in the air and an able man marker. He wasn't very fast but he offset this gap with the ability to read well the game and intercept the opponent.
