Silvestre is a former centre or left back. He spent the majority of his career at Manchester United from 1999 to 2008: 361 matches and 10 goals. He played also for Stade Rennais, Inter, Arsenal, Werder Bremen, Portland Timbers and Indian team Chennaiyin, retiring in 2014. He capped 40 times for France, scoring twice.
Silvestre was a good and versatile defender. He had pace and stamina as strongest points but he also was comfortable with the ball and could distribute it well. Moreover he had good dribbling ability. As side back he supported the attack quite often, taking advantage of his characteristics and delivering accurate early crosses to the box. As centre back he mostly made a defensive administration and distributed the ball with short passes around his zone. His mentality in this position though didn't look very high since he was more prone to commit fauls or mistakes. He seemed more comfortable on the flank. Capable in the air, he scored half of his goals at Manchester United with headers. He was left footed but sometimes used the right as well.
