Bassim Abbas is a former left back and centre back. His career began in 2000. He played in Iraq for Al-Talaba, Al-Kahrabaa, Amanat Baghdad and Al-Shorta ─ where he retired in 2016 ─ in Iran for Esteghlal Ahvaz, in Lebanon for Al-Nejmeh, in Qatar for Al-Arabi and Umm-Salal, in Turkey for Diyarbakırspor and Konyaspor. He gained 91 caps for Iraq, scoring once and taking part to the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, where he was named best defender of the tournament.
Abbas was a short but strong enough player, who relied on fine speed ─ especially on acceleration ─ covering and interception ability. He was though mostly renowned for his hard but usually fair tackling. He possessed decent technique and good ball distribution. His short passes were quite accurate and that was helpful when he pushed forward to support the attack. His long passes had good speed but were way less accurate. He also could make long throws with the hands.
