His career began in 1999. He played in Iraq for Kirkuk, Al-Talaba and Erbil, in the United Arab Emirates for Al-Wahda, in Saudi Arabia for Al-Ahli. However, he spent the majority of his career in Qatar, playing for Al-Khor, Al-Gharafa, Al-Arabi, Al-Wakrah and Al-Sadd, scoring over 140 goals in the country. He retired in 2016. With 148 matches and 57 goals for Iraq, he's the national team's most capped player the third top scorer. He won as captain ─ he captained the national team for ten years ─ the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, where he was the top scorer and was named MVP of the tournament. That same year he became the first and only player ever to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or and he reached a good 29th place. He also holds the record of goals scored in four different and consecutive AFC Asian Cups from 2004 to 2015. Regarded as one of the greatest ever players in the history of Iraq and one of the best ever Asian strikers, Mahmoud was an opportunist and consistently prolific scorer, mostly dangerous inside the box thanks to his good ability in the air. He possessed accuracy on both feet, good speed ─ especially on short distance ─ and the ability to keep the ball and defend it. He was effective as dummy runner, bringing the other defenders away from the other forwards. He then would either try to dribble the opponents or look for a teammate to pass the ball to since he could distribute the ball well with short passes. He had a strong body but he still fell easily in physical duels, obtaining many fouls. He lacked of mentality throughout the match but could solve it with one single action. He also was a decent free kick and penalty taker. Spoiler: show |
