Zheng Zhi is a defensive, central midfielder and centre back, capable of playing as attacking or side midfielder and side back. His professional career started in 2001 at Shenzhen, where he made 96 appearances in four seasons, scoring 18 goals and winning the Chinese Super League. He won it for a second time at Shandong Luneng, where he played 68 matches from 2005 and 2007, scoring 45 times. He then had stints in Europe, playing for Charlton Athletic from 2007 to 2009 and Celtic in 2009-10. His English experience was good as he played 70 games ─ most of which in 2007-08 ─ and scored 11 goals. He's been playing for Guangzhou since 2010 and has so far played 317 matches ─ most of which as captain ─ scored 19 goals, won the Chinese Super League a record eight times, the Chinese FA Cup twice, the AFC Champions League also twice. the Chinese FA Super Cup four times. He capped for China 108, scoring 15 goals.
One of the most successful Chinese players and considered one of the best ever in the history of the country, Zheng Zhi is very good and versatile, a fighting hardworker, equally effective in the defence and the attack. He possesses remarkable reading of the game, excellent vision, good passing ability that allow him to be playmaker either from the back or in a more advanced position. In the 2007-08 season at Charlton Athletic, he provided 6 assists other than scoring 9 goals. He's not quick, although he's gifted with good anticipation, strength, enough technique to keep the ball and defend it. A natural right-footed, he uses the left foot so many times and with so much efficiency, even to shoot on goal, that he often seems mainly left-footed. Also, he's a decent header and a good set piece taker, particularly a penalty specialist in his early years. While he was a prolific scorer prior to his transfer to Charlton Athletic, he scored a lot less during his experience at Guangzhou Evergrande as he was used mostly in a more defensive position. Nonetheless, he developed a superb long range shot.
