Balzaretti is a former left back or left wing back. He had his best time at Palermo, where he made 159 appearances from 2008 to 2012, scoring 3 goals. He played also for Varese, Siena, Torino, Juventus, Fiorentina and Roma, where he retired in 2015 due to injuries. He gained 16 caps for Italy.
In my opinion one of the best Italian offensive minded left backs of the 2000s, Balzaretti was a fast and very dynamic player, gifted with decent technique, good tactical awareness and great stamina. He wasn't too good defensively but thanks to his qualities and versatility, he made his presence felt around his own area as well. He was an excellent crosser, who provided numerous assists with high and low balls or cut back passes, sometimes preferring speed, sometimes accuracy. He showed fine shot technique in the few occasions where he scored. Mainly left-footed, he proved to be accurate with the right foot too.
