Mokoena is a former centre-back and defensive midfielder who also played as right-back. His career started in 1999 at Ajax where he had few chances to play. He was loaned to Germinal Beerschot in 2001 and 2002. He was sold to Genk in 2003 and stayed there until 2005. He had his best time at Blackburn Rovers where he made 139 appearances and scored 2 goals from 2005 to 2009. He then had a good experience at Portsmouth, playing 90 matches and scoring 3 goals from 2009 to 2012. He retired in 2013 following a year experience at Bidvest Wits. He capped for South Africa 107 times, scoring once. He holds the appearances record for his country.
Mokoena was a good player, solid in defending and distributing the ball. He wasn't among the best from a defensive perspective but he possessed a remarkable sliding tackle ability and the courage to use his body to stop shots. He was quite effective in the air due to an excellent jump and accurate heading that allowed him to win many high balls and score a few headers. His long passes from the back were usually accurate while not being particularly fast. He had decent pace overall but lacked notable speed on the ball. His technical qualities were also quite limited.
