Diatta is a former centre-back and right-back. His career started in 1998 at Toulouse. He signed for Olympique Marseille one year later but he was immediately sold to Stade Rennais without playing a game. He spent his best years with Rennes, making 147 appearances in five seasons, scoring 11 goals. He then played for Olympique Lyonnais, Saint-Étienne, Beşiktaş, Newcastle United, and Étoile du Sahel, but never with the same success he had with Stade Rennais. He retired in 2012. He capped for Senegal 72 times, scoring 4 goals, finishing runner-up at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and taking part to the FIFA World Cup the same year.
Diatta was a solid defender, able in man marking, gifted with physical strength, good tackling and remarkable jump. He lacked of notable technical and passing skills, with especially his ball control being often debatable. On the other hand, he could be seen clearing the ball first time in several occasions. Diatta was also relatively slow both off and on the ball, although he could make decent short sprints. His technical limits made him unable to be particularly effective in the attack as he used to push forward now and then when he was deployed as right-back.
