Carvalho was an incredible center-back with magnificent sense of positioning and even better reactions. What characterized him the most was his quickness, speed and agility. He used that assets very well during his whole career, and with speed compensated his lack of physical strength. He was weaker in physical duels that other defenders from that period. In his early years in Porto, he liked to join the attack and often starting them with long passes. He was blessed with good technical abilities for a center back and had a very good leap. He has from time to time some misunderstandings with fellow defenders which resulted in his mistakes, but over the years his communication with teammates on the pitch got better and better. He was also known for his perfectly timed sliding tackles which frustrated opponents.
He won trophies in different countries, most notably UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup with Porto. After winning Champions League in 2004, he was named as UEFA Club Best Defender of the Year. He was also part of the best eleven of different competitions.
He represented Portuguese NT in 89 games. He had good results with NT being second at EURO 2004 and fourth at the World Cup in 2006, but his greatest success came in 2016 when he became European Champion.
