Riise is a left-back or left-sided midfielder. He started his career in 1997 at Aalesund. He signed for Monaco one year later. He had his most successful time at Liverpool where he made 348 appearances and scored 31 goals from 2001 to 2008. He then had decent experiences with Roma from 2008 to 2011 and Fulham from 2011 to 2014. He retired three years later following forgettable spells at APOEL FC, Delhi Dynamos, Aalesund, Chennaiyin, and Norwegian fourth division team Rollon. He came back from retirement in 2023 to sign for fifth tier team Avaldnes. He capped for Norway 110 times, scoring 16 goals.
Distinguished by high consistency, excellent stamina and extremely powerful long range shots, Riise was arguably one of the best left-backs in the world in his prime. His offensive contribution was undeniable thanks to a combination of solid technique, strength, speed on long distances and threatening crossing ability. His crosses weren't always accurate but they had the speed the give problems to the opposition's defenses. He was often in charge of corner kicks before players like Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard were understandably preferred to him. When Riise had space, he could unleash tremendous and hardly stoppable cannonball shots, although they often missed the target. He was also a long throw specialist and a good free kick taker. While he wasn't the best from a defensive perspective, he showed decent covering and tackling from time to time.
