His career started in 1993 at Stade Poitevin. He then played for Châteauroux from 1996 to 1999. He had his best time at Lens where he made 86 appearances and scored 2 goals between 1999 and 2003, although he was a regular started between 2000 and 2002. He was also loaned briefly to Birmingham City in 2002. He retired in 2008 after experiences in Italy with Parma and Perugia. He capped for Senegal 44 times, finishing runner-up at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and taking part to the FIFA World Cup the same year. Coly was a good defender who could rely on excellent physical qualities such as strength, stamina, pace and jump. On the other hand, he wasn't very gifted from a technical standpoint as his ball control was often questionable, whereas his dribbling was decent at time. He was reactive on loose balls as he never wasted time to press an opponent and anticipate the ball with an accurate slide tackle. He was also good in the air, clearing the ball with a header many times. In addition, he was a specialist in long throw-ins. Whilst Coly rarely left his defence while playing for Senegal, he often joined the offense with Lens. His powerful and fast strides could be helpful for the attacking plays but the same can't be said for his ball distrubution. He could guess a right pass or cross from time to time, but his deliveries were inaccurate more often than not, sending the ball in areas where there was no teammate or making it easy for an opponent to read an intercept.
