Zé Maria is a former right back, right wing back and right side midfielder. His career started in 1991. He played for numerous clubs, especially in Brazil and Italy. He had his best time at Perugia from 2000 to 2004 after he had played there in 1998, totally making 170 appearances and scoring 20 goals. In Brazil, he played for Portuguesa, Sergipe, Ponte Preta, Flamengo, Palmeiras and Cruzeiro. In Italy, he spent seasons with Parma and Inter. He retired in 2009. He capped for Brazil 27 times, scoring once, winning Copa América and FIFA Confederations Cup in 2007.
Possibly one of the best crossers in Italy in his prime, Zé Maria was, in fact, distinguished for his pinpoint crosses with the right foot that ended most of the times on the head or feet of a teammate in the box. He delivered excellent balls either during active play or from set piece. He was effective mostly in the attack as he possessed good speed on long distance to rush forward. While his speed on tight space wasn't as good, his technical and dribbling skills were good enough to allow him to keep the ball and overcome the defenders in order to look for space to cross and less frequently to attempt the shot. He was a penalty specialist during his stint at Perugia as he scored 12 times from the penalty spot. He was also an excellent free kick taker who could be a threat even from long range, although he usually preferred placing the ball rather than shooting with power. Accurate with both feet, he used his natural right foot most of the times, often moving the ball to the right when it was initially on his left foot.
