Cristiano Doni is a former attacking midfielder, capable of playing also as left side midfielder and occasionally secondary striker. He spent the majority of his career at Atalanta, where he made 323 appearances in two spells, from 1998 to 2003 and from 2006 to his retirement in 2011, and scored 112 goals, becoming Atalanta's top scorer. He played also for Modena, Rimini, Pistoiese, Bologna, Brescia, Sampdoria and Mallorca. He gained 7 caps for Italy in the 2001-2002 biennium, scoring once and taking part to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
One of the most talented players in the history of Atalanta, Doni was known especially for his excellent vision of the game, technique, dribbling and creativity that made him one of the best Italian playmakers in the early 2000s. He wasn't very fast but could make good short bursts of speed when moving to the side to dribble his opponents especially. Equally effective as assist-man and scorer, he was a superb passer either with short balls or crosses, possessed great shot technique and could score especially with very powerful long range shots or sometimes with remarkable headers. He used well first time touches as well as the outside of the foot and was a set piece specialist. In fact, he scored for Atalanta several free kicks and 30 penalties. His performances weren't too consistent and this issue didn't allow him to have a good experience with the national team.
