INFO:Mahdavikia is a former side midfielder, winger and side back on the right. He had the best time of his career at Hamburger SV, where he made 263 appearances from 1999 to 2007, scoring 34 goals. In Germany, he played also for Bochum in 1998-99 and Eintracht Frankfurt from 2007 to 2009. He made 255 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 26 times and providing 55 assists. He played in Iran before and after transferring to Germany, having experiences with Bank Melli, Persepolis, PAS Tehran, Steel Azin and Damash. He retired in 2013. He capped for Iran 110 times, scoring 13 goals. He was team captain from 2006 to 2009.
One of the best players in Iran history, Mahdavikia was distinguished particularly for high stamina and excellent speed. He possessed superb technical and dribbling skills that allowed him to slide through the opposing defence with ease. He had great vision as his crosses were accurate and timely. He could send good balls from active play or dead ball situation, on the run or from a static position. The crosses usually were soft and well placed, although he could deliver good, fast cut back passes if necessary. He scored a few times from free kick and penalty. Whether he was crossing or shooting from free kick, he was capable of giving the ball great curling. He had a good eye for goal as he could make excellent runs off the ball to receive a pass in the box before making a run on the ball and shoot right before his opponent could reach him. Other than that, he had nice positional sense thanks to which he could get to the right spot inside the area and score with tap-ins or even headers despite his short physique. Mahdavikia's greatest performance is arguably the one he had against Juventus in a 4-4 draw of a 2000-01 UEFA Champions League group match: Juventus was leading 3-1 when Mahdavikia scored once, obtained a penalty, and assisted another goal. His best performance with Iran likely is the 4-3 win against China at the 2004 AFC Asian Cup, where he assisted three goals. The 2-1 win against USA is also memorable as he scored the winning goal with a fantastic long range shot, considered by many as the best goal of his career.
