Zauri is a former side back or side midfielder on either flank, capable of playing also as centre back or defensive midfielder. He spent the majority of his career at Atalanta and Lazio, making 175 appearances for the Bergamaschi from 1996 to 2003 ─ excluding the loan to ChievoVerona in 1997-98 ─ and 177 for the Biancocelesti from 2003 to 2013 ─ excluding loans to Fiorentina and Sampdoria between 2008 and 2011 ─ scoring respectively 6 and 3 goals. He retired in 2014 after an experience of one year and a half at Pescara. He gained 5 caps for Italy in the 2001-02 biennium.
Zauri was a good player, effective especially on the side to support the attack but also valuable in the defence, covering well his own area or opposing to shots. He was gifted with fine speed on long distance, technique, dribbling but wasn't too quick on turning. He was accurate with both feet, could use the outside, possessed decent passing ability and was a good crosser, sometimes taking free kicks. He occasionally showed a remarkable shooting ability with good power.
