INFO

Ahn Jung-hwan is one of South Korea's most iconic and culturally significant football figures, permanently etched into global football history by his exploits at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He burst onto the domestic scene with the Busan Daewoo Royals, remarkably winning the K League MVP award in 1999 despite his team not winning the championship title—a historic first. This domestic success earned him a groundbreaking move to AC Perugia, making him one of the early South Korean pioneers in Italy's Serie A. Ahn’s defining moment came in the Round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup, where he scored a dramatic extra-time golden goal against Italy, sealing South Korea's historic progression to the quarter-finals. Though his club career later took him on a nomadic journey through Japan, France, Germany, and China, he remained a transcendental national figure, finishing his international career with 17 goals in 71 caps, including three total World Cup goals to make him one of Asia's joint-highest scorers in tournament history.

Ahn was a versatile second striker widely considered one of the most technically gifted players South Korea has ever produced. Boasting exquisite, two-footed ball control, his lethal first touch allowed him to eliminate top-tier European league's defenders within just his first two touches. While he lacked the stamina and physical power to win traditional aerial or shoulder-to-shoulder battles, his superior technique allowed him to shield the ball effectively from aggressive challenges. He possessed solid top speed once in full stride, though his modest initial acceleration meant he relied on footwork rather than explosive pace to navigate tight spaces. Though he could set up teammates, Ahn had a strong individualistic streak and usually preferred finishing plays himself—whether through an accurate, clean strike from outside the box, or using his exceptional timing to score headers quite well.
