David Pizarro is a former central or defensive midfielder, capable of playing as attacking midfielder. He spent the majority of his career at Udinese from 1999 to 2005 (excluding a loan to Universidad de Chile in 2001) and Roma from 2006 to January 2012. He made 143 appearances for the Bianconeri and 209 for the Giallorossi, scoring 16 goals for each team. He played also for Santiago Wanderers ─ where he started his career in 1997 ─ Inter, Manchester City and Fiorentina. He retired in 2018 after two seasons at Universidad de Chile. He capped for Chile 46 times, scoring twice and winning the 2015 Copa América.
Pizarro mostly operated in the center of the midfield but could also be deployed in a holding role in front of the defensive line, in a more offensive position behind the forward line or as a deep-lying playmaker. He wasn't notably fast but he was distinguished for his outstanding tactical awareness, vision and excellent technical skills. He could dictate the rhythm of the play, control and defend the ball while waiting for his opponent before overcoming him with a dribbling, or deliver excellent passes. He was always accurate in the ball distribution and particularly gifted with crosses or pinpoint passes. He had a remarkable long range shot and was a set piece specialist. When he took a free kick, he usually preferred to cross the ball, though he occasionally attempted to score. He was a penalty specialist during his time at Udinese as he scored 12 of his 16 goals from the penalty spot. Despite having a short stature, he possessed decent strength that allowed him to win some physical challenges. Sometimes, he was too persistent in keeping the ball or looking for a dribbling, leading him to make mistakes even near his own area, where he also didn't show remarkable defensive skills. As a Roma player, he kept the ball much less, showing even greater tactical awareness and teamwork. The frequency, accuracy and speed of his crosses were higher, making him a threat when he had space as he could create great scoring chances with ease.
