Giannichedda was a defensive or central midfielder. His career began in 1992 at Sora, in Serie C. He transferred to Udinese in 1995 and played 188 matches in six seasons, scoring twice. He then played 138 games for Lazio from 2001 to 2005, scoring once. He retired in 2008 after two seasons at Juventus and one at Livorno. He gained 3 caps for Italy.
Giannichedda was a player of impressive quantity and quality. He was mainly defensive, maybe not too fast but was gifted with class and personality, outstanding stamina and temperament, thanks to which he fought on every ball in the center of the field. He was very good at covering the spaces but could also set up the play from the back. He rarely pushed too forward to try scoring and his shots didn't have much power but his only two goals with Udinese were nice shots from outside area.
