Matri is a former centre forward, capable of playing as secondary striker. He had his best time at Cagliari from 2007 to 2011 and Juventus from 2011 to 2013, scoring respectively 38 goals in 131 appearances and 29 in 83. He played also Milan, Fiorentina, Genoa, Lazio, Sassuolo, Brescia and other minor clubs, retiring in 2020. He capped for Italy 7 times, scoring once.
Matri was a dynamic and hardworking striker, excellent in the box thanks to his opportunism, positional sense and timing in front of the goal. He often played with his back to goal as he could make good movements off the ball and sprints on the lines. He had a remarkable physique that allowed him to resist the charges from the defenders and to be a threat in the air also due to a superb heading ability. His technical qualities, ball defence and dribbling skills made him not easy to stop. Unselfish and gifted with spirit of sacrifice, he moved a lot out of the box to make pressing on the opponents, create space for his teammates and provide assists.
