Jankulovski is a former left back or left wing back, capable of playing as left side midfielder and central midfielder. His career started in 1994 at Baník Ostrava, playing more than 110 matches in six seasons and scoring at least 15 goals. After spending two years at Napoli, he transferred to Udinese, playing 104 games from 2002 to 2005 and scoring 17 goals. He then joined Milan, where he played 158 matches from 2005 to 2011, scoring 5 times. He retired one year later after making one more appearance for Baník Ostrava. He played for Czech Republic in 78 occasions, scoring 11 goals.
Arguably one of the best left backs in the middle 2000s, Jankulovski was an offensive minded player, hardworking, tenacious, distinguished for high speed, huge stamina, remarkable technical skills, superb ball distribution especially when delivering accurate crosses from the side, threatening and powerful long range shots. He was a great support for the forward line. He was left-footed but comfortable with the right too and very capable of using the outside. Moreover, he was an excellent set piece taker. He sometimes was in charge of corners and most of his Czech Republic goals came either from free kick or penalty. He scored some penalties also for Udinese.
