His career started in 1989 with FC Bulle. He played for Neuchâtel Xamax from 1991 to 1995, making 106 appearances and scoring 2 goals. After spending two years in Germany with HSV, he transferred to England. He had two very good seasons at Blackburn Rovers from 1997 to 1999. He eventually had his most successful time at Liverpool where he played 205 matches from 1999 to 2004. He was occasionally deployed as right-back or sweeper out of necessity. He retired in 2008 after forgettable experiences with Celtic, Wigan Athletic and once again Blackburn Rovers. He capped for Switzerland 72 times. Henchoz was a tall, strong and consistent defender, known for his good man marking ability, brilliant tackling and solid game reading. He wasn't always effective one-on-one but his covering and constantly well-timed slide tackles made up for it. Seemingly, he lacked of high stamina as he often started puffing early in the match. However, he proved to have plenty of energy as he compensated with commitment and a never-say-die attitude that inspired his teammates too. He wasn'’t skilled on the ball nor notably quick but possessed a decent ball distribution. He was tough but also cool and fair as he didn't get flustered nor he made bad decisions. He never put a foot wrong and rarely missed tackles. Moreover, he would do anything to stop the ball crossing the line, using head, foot, or doing whatever it takes to prevent a goal. He was particularly capable in the air, winning almost all high balls thanks to a superb heading ability. Spoiler: show |
