Thiam is a former midfielder and defender who could play both on the right side and in the center. His career started in 1994 at 1.FC Köln where he played until 1998, making 98 appearances and scoring 4 goals. He then transferred to Stuttgart where he spent three seasons, playing 113 matches and scoring 11 goals. Following an underwhelming one and a half year experience at Bayern München between 2001 and January 2003, he signed for Wolfsburg where he had his longest spell, playing there from 2003 up to his retirement in 2008, making 135 appearances and scoring 12 goals. He represented the Guinea national team from 1993 to 2007, earning 31 caps and scoring 2 goals.
Thiam was a very versatile player who could cover several different positions in midfield and defence. As a Köln player, he was primarily fielded on the right side of the midfield where he showed good pace off the ball over long distances, solid technique when defending the ball, decent distribution especially in short passes, occasionally remarkable dribbling skills despite lacking notable agility. He was usually focused on the attack as he would surge forward to support the strikers or even attempt the shot himself. His support to the defensive phase was good too thanks to his ability to anticipate the opponents and recover the ball.
After joining Stuttgart, Thiam was turned into a proper centre-back, usually on the right. He played a slower game in comparison to his previous years at Köln. He took advantage of his positioning and anticipation, preferring them to hard challenges and tackles, due to his more visible agility issue that made him easy to get past with quick dribbling movements. He was less technical in these years and rarely attempted a dribbling. Regardless, he was still keen to join the forward line with marauding movements from time to time. He could be seen also carrying the ball himself into midfield like a sweeper. His positional sense and game reading ability also allowed him to make numerous head clearances without having to jump considerably.
When he transferred to Wolfsburg, he was neither a proper defender nor a midfielder focused on the attack. In fact, he was used mainly in front of the back-line. Technique and dribbling came handy once again, although he was much slower and less agile. His attempts to join the attack weren't uncommon but less frequent compared to the previous years. He was more of a fighter now as he didn't fear challenging an opponent physically to recover the ball. However, he could be anticipated easily by a slightly quicker opponent and his tackles were now frequent, aggressive and usually foul. In this role, his struggles in ball distribution were more visible. Therefore, he would usually pass the ball short and safe to the nearest teammate.
