Hyypiä is a former centre back. His career began in Finland in 1991. He joined Willem II in 1995, playing three seasons and a half. He eventually tranferred to Liverpool in 1999, making 464 appearances and scoring 35 goals in ten seasons, winning a UEFA Champions League, a UEFA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two FA Cups, two Football League Cups and two FA Charity Shields. He retired in 2011 after two years at Bayer Leverkusen. He gained 105 caps for Finland, scoring 5 times.
Hyypiä was a commanding and strong defender, highly consistent and gifted with great positioning as well as hard tackling ability. He moved quite slowly and lacked of technique but his large physique made him capable to keep the ball against not very quick opponents. Moreover, he was very tenacious and present in every zone in the defence. Excellent in the air, he took advantage of his heading ability not only to intercept balls but also to score most of his goals. However, he occasionally proved to be capable of scoring using his feet too with superb volleys. His passes were fast and had fine accuracy especially the long ones. In fact, he delivered very good pinpoint crosses from the back, sometimes triggering an attack. Always in great conditions, he played 55 to 68 matches per season from 2000 to 2006.
