Dimitar Berbatov is a former centre forward or secondary striker. His career began in 1998 at CSKA Sofia. In 2000, he signed for Bayer Leverkusen, spending six seasons, scoring 91 goals in 201 matches. In 2006, he transferred to England, playing for Tottenham Hotspur, where he made 102 appearances in two years, scoring 46 goals. He then played for Manchester United from 2008 to 2012, scoring 56 goals in 149 games. He retired in 2018 after short experiences with Fulham, Monaco, PAOK and Indian club Kerala Blasters. He capped for Bulgaria 78 times, scoring 48 goals.
Berbatov was an excellent striker, distinguished for his big physique, high technical skill, cool composure, tactical intelligence, and elegant movements. He wasn't too fast, but he compensated with outstanding ball control, great dribbling, and impeccable positioning that enabled him to get himself on most balls after deflections or goalkeeper saves. Not only he was a great and prolific finisher, but he had the sharpness to send his teammates in front of the goal. In fact, he possessed a remarkable passing ability that he showed from outside the area or the goal-line, first time, with the outside of the foot or the heel. He moved with right timing during an offensive play in order to receive a pass from midfield. This way, he added great depth to the action. In England, he seemed less effective due to his new style of play which was more laid-back and composed. Therefore, he was at times criticized of being lazy and inconsistent. In reality, he simply adapted himself to Manchester United's game, putting his excellent touches and technical skill at the team's service, combining those qualities especially with the unmatched determination and effort of his forward partner Wayne Rooney.
