Johnson is a former centre forward and right winger. He had the best time of his career at Crystal Palace, where he scored 85 goals in 160 appearances from 2002 to 2006. He played also for Birmingham City, Everton, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. He retired in 2015. He gained 8 caps for England but never scored.
Johnson was a good striker, although prolific mostly in Second Division. He possessed excellent speed, quick dribbling and sense of position. He was reactive in front of the goal and gifted with a good heading ability despite his short size. He also was a penalty specialist.
