Barmby is a former attacking or side midfielder, winger and occasionally centre forward and central midfielder in his later years. His career began in 1992 at Tottenham Hotspur, where he played 108 matches and scored 28 goals in three seasons. He joined Middlesbrough in 1995, staying there for almost a year and a half, scoring 10 times in 49 games. He transferred in 1996 to Everton, where he scored 24 goals in 132 appearances. However, the 1999-00 season was the best, with 43 matches and 10 goals. So, he joined Liverpool and after a very good 2000-01 season, where he scored 8 goals in 46 games and won UEFA Cup, FA Cup, Football League Cup and FA Charity Shield, he didn't repeat himself the following year. After unsuccessful seasons at Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, he transferred to Hull City in 2004. He had with "the Tigers" his longest spell, spending eight seasons, playing 197 matches and scoring 32 goals, before retiring in 2012. He gained 23 caps and scored 4 goals for England.
Mainly an attacking midfielder in his early career, Barmby was the kind of player who gave trouble to defenders with his great pace and agility, good dribbling and unpredictability. He was an excellent passer, either with short or long balls. Also a good scorer, he always took the chance to surge forward, beating defenders and goalkeepers with his speed. Mostly right footed, he was accurate with the left too. During his time at Everton and Liverpool, he improved his passes, especially the long ones, and his dribbling skills. So, he became a nightmare for most defenders as said abilities added to his quickness and technique. Moreover, he proved to be also a nice header, either as scorer or provider of assists.
After transferring to Hull City, he was understandably slower, but often fast enough to reach the ball before his opponents. His timing inside the box was still right and his heading even better as he scored or assisted with his head several times. His ball distribution was still good, though he usually provided assists with fast through passes and less frequently with crosses. Despite the fact that his form was far from being optimal, given that he missed many matches due to injury and rarely played full games, he was an important player for Hull City, being instrumental in the team's historical promotion to Premier League.
