Hamann is a former central and defensive midfielder, who played also as right side midfielder and wing back in his early years. His career began in 1993 at Bayern München, where he made 143 appearances and scored 10 goals. After the 1998-99 season at Newcastle United, he joined Liverpool, having there his longest experience: 280 matches and 11 goals from 1999 to 2006. He retired in 2011 after three years at Manchester City and one at Milton Keynes Dons. He gained 59 caps for Germany, scoring 5 times, taking part to the 1998 and 2004 FIFA World Cups as well as the 2000 and 2004 UEFA Euro.
Despite acting mainly in the center of the field, Hamann was often used on the right side during his time at Bayern, where he became a regular in the 1997-98 season. He was most effective in the attack, showing good dribbling skills and excellent technique that compensated his lack of speed. He was tall and had a good physique but wasn't too strong in physical challenges. Gifted with superb distribution, he was especially good with short passes. His shots were incredibly powerful but not always very accurate. In England, he played exclusively as defensive or central midfielder, helping more in the defence but not disliking some progression forward mainly looking for space to deliver a long range shot. He also scored a few free kicks at Liverpool.
