Westerveld is a former goalkeeper. He had his best time at Liverpool, making 105 appearances between 1999 and 2001, winning a UEFA Cup, an FA Cup, a Football League Cup, an FA Charity Shield and a UEFA Supercup. He played also for Twente, Vitesse, Real Sociedad, Mallorca, Portsmouth, Everton, AlmerÃa, Sparta Rotterdam, Monza and Ajax Cape Town, where he retired in 2013. He gained 6 caps for Netherlands, taking part to the 2000 UEFA Euro.
Westerveld was a complete player, gifted with excellent goalkeeping skills, positioning and was comfortable with his feet. He was highly effective when diving, quick despite a strong built, very reliable in 1-on-1 situations covering well the goal. Tall and capable of making good leaps, he was confident with crosses. A great shot stopper, he also possessed remarkable reflexes and catching ability. Moreover, he had speed of thought and good ball distribution, thanks to which he triggered lightning-quick attacks from his own box. On the other hand, he lacked of dominance in his own area.
