INFO:Murphy is a former central midfielder, capable of playing as side, attacking or defensive midfielder. His career began in 1993 at Crewe Alexandra where he played from 1993 to 1997, scoring 30 goals in 142 matches. Then he was bought by Liverpool and loaned back to Crewe Alexandra after one season. He returned to Liverpool in 1999 and played regularly until his departure in 2004: 246 games and 44 goals in total with the "Reds". After seasons at Charlton Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur, he joined Fulham in 2007. Here he found great form again, playing 198 matches and scoring 28 goals in five seasons. He retired in 2013 at the end of his one and only season at Blackburn Rovers. He capped 9 times for England and scored once.
Murphy was a versatile player and the motor of the midfield. He had good pace, was gifted with technique and dribbling, was a great passer of the ball, was both a free kick and penalty specialist, could give the ball a very good effect, was accurate with both feet and could use well the outside, could score great goals and make nice first time touches. At Liverpool he proved to be very effective as side midfielder − especially on the left − since the team had better options as playmakers.
