Costinha was a defensive or central midfielder. He had his best time at Monaco from 1997 to 2001 and Porto from 2001 and 2005, playing respectively 84 and 109 league matches. He played also for Dynamo Moscow, Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta at the end of his career. He capped 53 time for Portugal.
