Grown at Monaco, he eventually debuted in 1995 with National 1 team Gazélec Ajaccio where he played on loan. After another loan the following year, this time to SA Spinalien, he eventually stayed at Monaco from 1997 to 2000 but played only 10 times in the last season. He was loaned again in 2000-01, this time to Ajaccio. He found a bit more space at Monaco between 2001 and 2004, making 23 appearances, but was mainly the reserve goalkeeper. He eventually had his peak at club level with Lille where he played 167 matches between 2004 and 2008. He retired in 2010 after spending two seasons at Trabzonspor. He capped for Senegal 84 times, finishing runner-up at 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, where he named best goalkeeper of the tournament, and reaching the quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup the same year. He had excellent performances in both competitions. He was also named best goalkeeper of the 2004-05 Ligue 1 and best Senegalese player of the year. Undoubtedly one of the best African goalkeepers of the 2000s, Sylva was daring but effective as he rarely made major mistakes. He possessed outstanding reflexes and shot stopping ability as he could decisively block even powerful and tricky shots without much effort. He often came off his goal, showing quickness in his short runs to anticipate the striker and win the one-on-one challenge as well as excellent jump and physical strength when he collected or punched away a cross. On the other hand, he wasn't always optimal in his positioning, occasionally giving the opposing strikers a chance to score. His reaction was though usually enough to make up for the issue. In addition, he could use his feet too, using them to deflect a low shot, to distribute a fast long ball forward, or even to dribble a striker occasionally. Fearless as he was, he sometime would even use his head to clear a ball. Sylva could also be a great penalty saver as he proved at the shoot-out of the 2002 African Cup final. Spoiler: show |
