His career started in 1998 at Sochaux. He then played for Stade Rennais in 1999-00. He had his best two year between 2000 and 2002 as he scored 19 goals in 61 appearances for Lens, finished runner-up at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal and took part to the FIFA World Cup the same year, earning a spot in the All-Star Team of the tournament. After two underwhelming seasons at Liverpool, he had one more good experience at Bolton Wanderers where he scored 24 goals in 136 matches between 2004 and 2008. He retired in 2015 following experiences with Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, Rangers, Doncaster Rovers, Leeds United, and Malaysian team Sabah. He capped for Senegal 70 times, scoring 24 goals. He was named African Footballer of the Year in 2001 and 2002. Diouf was an exciting forward who made of pace and technical qualities his best assets. He was extremely fast off the ball, skilled and agile on the ball, comfortable with both feet, capable of controlling the ball in difficult situations, defending it, challenging and getting past multiple opponents. He possessed solid ball distribution which he showed with good passes or crosses that he delivered whenever he didn't have a solution that allowed him to attempt a shot. He wasn't remarkably prolific but possessed a solid shot nonetheless. He was also a good header and set piece taker, occasionally taking free kicks and corner kicks. Moreover, he didn't disdain falling back into midfield, helping his teammate recovering the ball and setting up the attacking play. He had all the tools to become one of the best wingers in the world but his peak ended too soon, the reasons being lack of consistency, and mediatic overexposure. Spoiler: show |
