McCarthy was one of the best South African strikers ever, and surely one of the most decorated. He was a part of FC Porto generation which conquered Europe in 2003/04 season in which he was the top scorer of Portuguese Primeira Liga. He possessed powerful shot which caused troubles to goalkeeper from in-play or dead ball situations. He was fast, with decent technique, and had a good leap. He was pretty good penalty taker. One of his most memorable moments came in 1/8 finals match against Manchester United when he scored twice, and also in rematch at Old Trafford where his free kick was too difficult for Tim Howard to handle and the ball just bounced to Costinha who put it into the net. He played for South African NT for 15 years, and during that period he was their key player. He was the top scorer of 1998 African Nations Cup and was a part of South African squad that qualified for the 1998 World Cup for the first time in nations history.
