Toldo was a goalkeeper. He spent most of his career at Fiorentina from 1993 to 2001 and Inter from 2001 to 2010, playing respectively 336 and 234 matches. He gained 28 caps for Italy.
Toldo was a reliable goalkeeper, gifted with coolness, personality and great reaction. Capable with both hands and feet, his saves were basic but effective. He could stop long range shots, many times blocking rather than rejecting them. Despite his huge size, he was very able on the ground at stopping shots and in 1-on-1 situations. On the other hand, he sometimes made avoidable mistakes, seemed to have troubles on headers and was uncertain out of the goal when he had to catch high balls. Not a very good penalty saver in his early career, he then became a specialist: great was his performance at UEFA Euro 2000, when he stopped three out of six penalties against Netherlands.
