Houghton is a former right side or central midfielder, deployed on the left or as attacking midfielder out of necessity. Raised at West Ham United, he debuted professionally in the 1981-82 season. He transferred to Fulham the following season. He moved to Oxford United in 1985. He eventually had his best time at Liverpool, where he made 202 appearances and scored 38 goals from 1987 to 1992. He then had good stints at Aston Villa from 1992 to 1995 and Crystal Palace from 1995 to 1997. He retired in 2000 after playing for Reading and Stevenage Borough. He capped for Ireland 73 times, scoring 6 goals.
A hardworking midfielder and great team player, Houghton was an inspiration for his teammates due to his energy and smooth runs on the right flank that perfectly suited Liverpool's style of play. Right-footed but comfortable with the left too, he was from being a prolific finisher. In fact, while he scored some remarkable goals he also missed an incredible number of chances. Houghton himself mentioned during a 2007 interview that he lacked for technique, coolness and calmness in front of the goal. Anyway, Liverpool didn't sign him to be a scorer. The Irish midfielder was the kind of player who had a busy, all-action style of play as he put all his effort in the game, moving constantly and always with a purpose. He possessed good vision, accuracy with the outside, high speed on long distance, and the ability to work his way into good positions despite not having a notably accurate shot. He could beat a defender before picking out a teammate with a well-placed pass or cross, and there was no way to stop him from chipping the ball in the box. He was also active in the back as he could effectively move inside and closer to the back line, especially when his team was under pressure. Furthermore, he had good strength for a man of his size, and he was difficult to force off the ball.
