A Celtic legend, one of the best players in club history. McStay was an elegant playmaker with great vision and ball retention, his head always raised and looking for his next pass. He was also a decent scorer and possessed a powerful shot, could cover a lot of ground on the pitch, and was even a pretty good ball winner. Every time he received the ball he would swivel away from his marker, assess his options and then play the smartest pass to advance his team up the pitch. Really intelligent and subtle midfielder. He was known for his loyalty to Celtic, choosing to stay at the club for his entire career despite interest from Inter Milan, and also despite the fact he was unlucky to play in some of the worst teams in Celtic's history. He served as captain from 1990 until his retirement in 1997, although he was sometimes criticised for not having the heart of a leader and being too passive at times, and his quiet and humble personality sometimes led fans to believe he "didn't care" enough to be captain. Two of his great-uncles, Jimmy and Willie McStay, also captained Celtic in the 1920s. He also captained Scotland and played for his country at two World Cups and Euro 1992, where he scored against CIS and was arguably Scotland's best player. He was forced to retire in 1997 through injury after making 678 appearances for his only club, incredibly winning only 3 league titles in 16 seasons, none as captain, the vast majority of his career played during a time where Rangers, Aberdeen and Dundee United were the dominant forces in Scottish football.
