Gale is a former a centre back. He played mostly for Fulham and West Ham United. He spent seven seasons with the "Cottagers" from 1977 to 1984, playing 318 matches and scoring 21 goals. Then he had a ten-year spell with the "Hammers", playing 368 games and scoring 7 times. He played also for Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace and Maidenhead United, where he retired in 1998.
Gale was a calm and careful defender, who had in toughness and a powerful physique his strongest points. Moreover, he was gifted with decent speed, considering his size. He had fine basic technique that made him an able dribbler and average passer. Because he was effective in the air, he liked joining the attack during corners and free kicks, being a danger in the opposing box. He was a leader of the defence, always showing his defensive instincts throughout his whole career.
