Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Attack MindedINFO:Excellent former Everton striker, their second top scorer of all time only behind the legendary Dixie Dean. Sharp was a brilliant target man who was just as good at providing for his teammates as he was at scoring goals himself, his hold up play was magnificent and he could easily bring down long balls and pass them on or accurately flick them on with his head. He was a combative but very intelligent striker, excelling in dragging opposition defenders all over the place because of his ability to come deep and play with the ball on the ground, but also being very formidable in the air where he was often the main target for the crosses of Kevin Sheedy and Trevor Steven. His first touch was great, his short passing was very solid and he always made the smart and safe decisions to secure possession for Everton. The Toffees team from the mid 80s was a direct side who often played the long ball out of defence, and without Graeme Sharp's excellence as a target man they would have never been as successful as they were. Apart from his abilities as a provider, his finishing was excellent, especially scoring several spectacular volleys and shots from long range, and his heading ability made him a menace in the penalty area. These attributes allowed Sharp to score 159 goals for Everton, a record in the post-war period for the club. And yet he probably played a part in almost twice as many goals as that, such was his importance to the way his team played. Despite his massive success for Everton, he only played 12 times for Scotland, suffering the same fate as many Scottish players that played much of their careers in England. Overall an incredibly complete player and one of the biggest figures in Everton's history.
