Bruni was a central midfielder, used also several times as wing or side back when needed. His professional career began in 1978 at Fiorentina, where he was considered as "new De Sisti". His three-year spell with the Viola wasn't though very successful, mainly due to a bad injury he suffered in the 1980-81 season. Moreover, his short size was the reason why no bigger club considered him He played for Pistoiese and Reggiana between 1981 and 1983 before joining Hellas Verona. He was a key player for the Gialloblu, especially in the glorious 1984-85 season, when he had to play in the centre of the field instead of Domenico Volpati, who had to replace the injured Mauro Ferroni in defence. He played 156 matches and scored 6 goals for Hellas Verona in six seasons. The last two though were problematic due to another bad injury that forced him to a long stop. He played for Lucchese, Siena, Castelfiorentino and Arezzo, before retiring in 1994.
Bruni wasn't strong but he was gifted with good technical qualities and dynamism, even though he didn't seem too fast. He gave a lot of troubles to the opposing midfielders thanks to his constant movements. Effective mainly when the team was attacking, he had a good right shot with fine power and sometimes used the left as well. His main characteristic though was his passing ability, especially with crosses and long balls from the back. In fact, he also took corners. Despite acting mostly in the outside of the area, occasionally even trying the long range shot when he could, he often was seen inside the opposing box, looking for a goal or a free teammate to assist.
