Vignola was an attacking and central midfielder. He played on the right side in the 1983-84 Cup Winners' Cup final against Porto. He grew up at Hellas Verona, where he debuted in 1978, but spent most of his career at Avellino ─ 105 matches and 23 goals ─ from 1980 to 1983 and Juventus ─ 128 games and 18 goals ─ from 1983 to 1988 (without considering the 1985-86 season on loan at Hellas Verona). He then played for Empoli and Mantova, retiring in 1992.
Compared to Gianni Rivera, Vignola was a creative and technically very gifted midfielder and able piece taker, who could give the ball a good effect. Almost exclusively left-footed, he was an excellent playmaker and passer with great tactical intelligence, who organized the play and triggered attacking actions, but he also possessed a thunderous and accurate shot, which he used many times from outside the box. He was fast, agile, dynamic and reactive enough but he had a fragile body and wasn't solid in physical duels. He was at Juventus mainly the reserve of Platini but the two played together several times and it wasn't rare that Vignola even gave advices to Le Roi, for example about how taking free kicks.
