Saeed is a former centre forward, comfortable also as winger. He spent his entire career at Al-Talaba, where he scored 122 goals in 181 matches from 1975 to 1990, winning three Iraqi Premier Leagues. He gained 137 caps for Iraq, scoring 78 goals and he's the national team's top scorer. He won the Arabian Gulf Cup in 1979 and 1984 as well as the Asian Games in 1982. He took part to the 1986 FIFA World Cup after he led Iraq as captain throughout the qualifiers. However, he only played the first World Cup match against Paraguay and then was sent back home due to injury. IFFHS named him 25th Asia's Best Player of the Century.
A highly prolific striker, Saeed is regarded as Iraq's greatest player alongside Ahmed Radhi. Incredibly accurate in front of the goal, he looked to unmark himself and receive the ball in the most favorable position before beating the goalkeeper. A very capable header, he scored many times with headers with the help of a good leap. However, it wasn't too rare that he could score some remarkable goals. Mainly left-footed, he could use the right too. He possessed fine speed, technique and dribbling ability. He also was a penalty specialist.
