Hashim was a central midfielder. His career began in 1978 and ended in 1995. He played for Al-Amana, Al-Jaish, Al-Rasheed, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya and Al-Khutoot. He gained 97 caps for Iraq, scoring 12 goals. He won the 1982 Asian Games, took part to the 1984 Olympics and the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
One of the brightest and most prominent midfielders in Iraq during the 1980s, Hashim was compared to Michel Platini due to his abilities and skills resembling the ones of the French legend even though the Iraqi played in the center of the field. He was quite slow but possessed good strength, fine technique, shooting ability and he surged forward when he had the chance. His good height helped him score a few headings. A distinguished playmaker and able assist-man, he left his mark for his country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup when he delivered a charming pass for Ahmed Radhi, who scored the team's only goal in the tournament.
