INFO:
Gorgis is a former attacking midfielder, who could play also in the center of the field. His career began in 1977. He played for Al-Sadoon, Al-Amana, Al-Shabab and Al-Talaba, retiring in 1991. He then made a short comeback in 1995, playing for Canadian team North York Astros. He gained 55 caps for Iraq, scoring 4 goals, taking part to the 1984 and 1988 Arab Cups, 1985 Pan Arab Games, 1986 FIFA World Cup ─ he played against Paraguay and Belgium but received a red card in the second match ─ 1988 Olympics and 1988 FIFA Arab Cup.
Regarded by many as one of the greatest midfielders in Iraq history ─ preceeded by Ahmed Hadi and followed by Nashat Akram ─ Gorgis was a tall hardworking player, renowned for his tenacity and ability to orchestrate the attack. He possessed good dribbling, decent pace, passing ability, accuracy with first time touches and the outside of the foot, could set the rhythm of the game according to conditions needed by his team, scored and created scoring chances in harmony with his teammates. Moreover, he was capable at defending. His best performances were arguably the 1985 Pan Arab Games final against Morocco and the 1988 Arab Cup final against Saudi Arabia. In the first, he provided an assist for Ahmed Radhi with one of his typical passes and then scored the winning goal with a beautiful header; in the second, he scored a beautiful goal after exchanging the ball with Ahmed Radhi and dribbling the goalkeeper.
