Jia Xiuquan is a former centre back, capable of playing as defensive midfielder. He spent most of his career at Bayi from 1979 to 1987. He played also in Serbia for Partizan between 1987 and 1989 alongside Liu Haiguang, and in Japan for Gamba Osaka in 1992-93 ─ when he retired ─ making respectively 19 and 25 appearances. He became the first Chinese player to take part to the J.League and to be featured in a UEFA Cup match when Partizan faced Roma on 26th October 1988. He capped for China 65 times, scoring 9 goals and playing in the 1984 AFC Asian Cup, where China finished runner-up. The defender was named MVP of the tournament.
One of the best defenders in the history of China, Jia Xiuquan was a hard tackler and good man marker. Clever and quick, he could take the ball from his opponent with accuracy thanks to superb anticipation and great ball winning ability that he developed throughout the years, outrunning even faster players and lasting until the end of the match. He wasn't though tough as he reduced the physical challenges at minimum. Therefore, he faced hard times in Yugoslavia against powerful strikers. Other than his good defensive skills, he possessed also decent attacking awareness as he could carry the ball and dribble his opponents. He occasionally pushed forward to the half or even further, providing assists and attempting the shot. Also, he was decent in the air.
