He spent the majority of his career at Liverpool, where he made 292 appearances from 1984 to 1995, scoring 61 goals. He played also for Kolding, Ajax, Barnsley, Norwich City and Swansea City, retiring in 1998. He capped for Denmark 33 times, scoring twice. Considered one of the most talented midfielders and greatest passers in Liverpool's history, Mølby was known for his excellent technical skill, game reading ability and world class vision. He was notably strong and hard to shake the ball off, but also quite slow, especially in tight spaces. Therefore, his qualities made up for his lack of mobility. He couldn't run on the ball, but he was capable of splitting the defence with his fifty or sixty meters long passes into space, or troubling the goalkeeper with his terrific long range shots. Whatever he did with the ball, he knew exactly where he wanted it to go and he invariably put it there. He could make a move from short or long range using either foot. He could bend the ball with the outside, chip it with the inside, drive it with the instep. Mølby didn't have the mentality to play a great game for ninety minutes, resulting in awful ball controls and useless first time shots. On the other hand, he could turn the match with a single pass after he disappeared for a long period. When he passed the ball, it looked like he hit it with a soft touch. Yet, the ball would just fly off his foot as he gave it a lot of speed, even more with short and ground passes. Everything he did was simple and effective. He tried the most difficult passes, and he never wasted a potential shot attempt. He couldn't get enough of playing the ball when his teammates were running for him. In addition, Mølby was a penalty specialist, and he's the most prolific penalty taker in Liverpool's history with 42 penalties scored and only 3 missed. He scored also a few free kicks, showing the ability to give the ball a good curling. Unfortunately, injuries and physical problems starting from 1987 affected his career that, otherwise, could've been even greater. Spoiler: show |
